Research Spotlight: What Makes Sustainable Bioplastics Acceptable to the Public

Picture a shopper reaching for a bag of vegetables, pausing for a moment between convenience and conscience. The label says compostable, the material looks like ordinary plastic, and the decision depends on trust, price, clarity, and whether the product feels fit for everyday use.

That everyday pause sits at the heart of a wider sustainability challenge. New materials can be designed in the laboratory, but their impact depends on whether people understand them, value them, and use them correctly.

In the article featured here, Jade Stanley, David Culliton, Antonio-Jonay Jovani-Sancho, and Adriana Cunha Neves examine public acceptance of starch protein blend bioplastics through a survey and focus group study in Ireland. We spoke with one of the authors, Adriana Cunha Neves of South East Technological University, Carlow, to learn more about public acceptance of sustainable bioplastics and the communication needed to support responsible adoption.

Key findings from the article

The article contributes three practical insights into how people interpret bioplastics and what may influence adoption.

Public understanding of bioplastics remains uneven. In the survey, age influenced understanding of biobased and biodegradable terminology, education influenced understanding of what bioplastic means, and many participants were more familiar with biodegradable than biobased.

Packaging is a central concern for consumers. The article reports that roughly four in five participants identified packaging as the largest contributor to plastic pollution, with food packaging seen as a particularly important source.

Material acceptance depends on experience as well as values. In the focus group, Tapioca was favoured for clarity, colour, and overall appeal, while the sustainable Swamp Taro sample gained support once participants learned more about its source and compostability.

Interestingly, the findings suggest that sustainable design must account for both environmental performance and everyday usability. Adriana Cunha Neves reflected on the study’s most important or surprising finding: “While consumers recognize the environmental issues linked to conventional packaging, this study highlights a critical need for greater education and awareness regarding the nature, benefits, and limitations of bioplastics.”

Methods and research approach

The study used an exploratory mixed methods design. The authors examined laboratory prepared starch protein blend bioplastics made from Potato, Tapioca, Sago, and Swamp Taro, then compared public views of these materials with views of commercial and conventional plastic samples.

The survey included 125 participants and combined demographic questions, questions about terminology, and questions about acceptance of sustainable materials. The quantitative component used nonparametric analysis, including chi square tests and cross tabulations, while the focus group involved seven participants who ranked materials by colour, touch, clarity, and overall preference, then discussed sustainability, cost, packaging use, labels, and public awareness.

How Evidano supported the research

The authors state that Evidano AI qualitative data analysis software was used to assist with thematic analysis, helping to mitigate any unintentional bias during the focus group data interpretation. The article does not present Evidano as replacing the authors’ analysis, nor does it attribute scholarly judgment to the tool. The authors retained responsibility for interpretation, analysis, validation, and writing.

Adriana Cunha Neves also noted how AI tools can support careful research workflows when used responsibly: “Evidano is particularly valuable for researchers who lack extensive experience in qualitative data analysis, offering an efficient way to organize large datasets while minimizing the influence of pre-existing knowledge and researcher bias.”

Broader implications

For researchers, the study offers a useful model for connecting material development with public interpretation. It shows how survey data, focus group discussion, and direct engagement with sample materials can reveal not only what people say they value, but how those values change when cost, appearance, and sustainability information are made visible.

For manufacturers, designers, educators, and policymakers, the message is practical. Better bioplastics need better communication, and Adriana Cunha Neves offered this takeaway for readers: “The solution to plastic pollution does not rest solely with scientists, consumers, retailers, or policymakers. Rather, it requires a collective effort in which all stakeholders work together to drive meaningful and lasting change.”

Ultimately, the article reminds us that sustainable materials are social objects as well as technical ones. Their future depends on chemistry and engineering, but also on trust, clear labels, realistic prices, and products that people can recognise as useful in daily life.
